If you're going on a long plane or road trip, what sort of reading materials do you bring along? Is it different from what you usually read? Will you watch a trashy movie or read a bad novel or magazines just to pass the time?

View 851 Answers

If it's a car trip I usually bring a lot of stuff and then don't actually make use of any of it. I feel sick if I read for too long so usually look out the window (with my family this is the most likely outcome.) or talk to people. If I'm taking a plane I always bring books, no particular kind, and never magazines. They're much too short. I initially try to ignore the in-flight movie if there is one but often end up watching it anyway. haha

When you get sick, do you prefer to go it alone or be doted upon by a friend, partner, or parent? Do you usually go to work or school or stay home?

View 1260 Answers

Most of the time I'll go to school or wherever, just take medicine beforehand. If I'm really really sick, as in nonfunctioning, then I'll stay home. In that case I wouldn't want to be doted on all the time, just visited occasionally. :)

Do you believe in astrology? If so, how often do you check your horoscope and how does it impact your life? If not, do you get annoyed when people make assumptions about you based on your sign?

I don't believe in astrology but I do find it interesting, especially the historical context behind it. But I never check my horoscope because that's just rubbish.

The house seems really quiet right now. For the past week we've had peoples over and now that they're gone it's kinda spooky. I guess that I should take advantage of this peace while I can because I'm going back to LSU on Thursday and I'll probably never get any more sleep. Ever. This week was really fun though.

Oh yeah, about two weeks ago my family went on our cruise! (finally) It was pretty fun, I just got tired of being stuck on that boat (yes it was fairly large but Melissa and I explored pretty much all of it the first evening) for such a long time and surrounded by family. I'll probably go on a cruise again, just not with them ... well no. I don't mind hanging around Melissa but she didn't enjoy the cruise that much and doesn't have much interest in going again. Anyway, in Jamaica we climbed Dunn's River Falls, which was actually the most exciting thing that we did. Technically we were supposed to wear water shoes but they were expensive (and renting water shoes? That's just gross.) so we just went barefoot and didn't fall down once! However, Melissa attracted this creeper dude, which was actually pretty hilarious. Probably because everyone was scantily clad and had to hold on to the hands of the person in front and behind, for stability. Second stop was Grand Cayman, where we basically just went to Seven Mile Beach. And no, we didn't walk all seven miles. I kinda wish that we did but it took us forever to find the beach and you don't get adequate time ashore ... it was so beautiful. We even saw a waterspout and tried to take a picture but it turned out kinda blurry. Third and final stop was Cozumel, though we didn't spend much time there. We had to immediately hop on a boat to the mainland and drive to the Mayan ruins at ... Tulum. It was pretty cool. The ruins were on the beach, which is apparently rare but it was so hot outside that we didn't enjoy the sights to the max, and we couldn't climb up the ruinds, which disappointed me. Basically the cruise in a nutshell.

Have to babysit, I mean nanny, tomorrow and Wednesday. It shouldn't be that bad, and I'll have moolah for going back to school. College is expensive if you want to join everyone in all the exciting stuff that they go do. Thursday there's already a group bound for Spanish Moon and 80s night. I hope that it's better this year than last year. Definitely can't afford to go all the time, unless I get a job this semester which I truly intend to do. I'm excited about returning to LSU, even though the roommate thing didn't turn out like I planned. However, I contacted one of my future roommates and she seems to be really nice so I'm sure there won't be a problem. It's going to be strange living in East Laville again ...

I got a new computer!! It runs so quickly and it's a Toshiba, such a nice change from poor old Fredd. (this new computer I called Aria. Like anyone cares.) Still not a fantastic computer, because after all, my parents bought it, but assuredly an improvement and I'm so grateful to my parents.

Je pense que c'est tout.

I finished my essays for studying abroad! I had to write one in English and then re-write it in French. It made me realize just how much my French speaking abilities go to pot during the summer. I kept on forgetting stuff that you learn in  French I. Anyway. I finished and then ... just discovered that I also need to mail in an official transcript. That I have to have mailed to me first. That I just sent for today. And it usually takes 2-3 weeks for mail to get here from Baton Rouge. And I'm going to be out of country from July 26-August 1. And the application is due August 1. FML So I e-mailed the lady in charge of the bilateral exchanges asking if I could send what I have now and just send the official transcript when I get it. Honestly it won't be that late.

Can't remember if I mentioned this already BUT I officially quit my job at the garden center. Now I'm trading off days with my sister to "babysit" some pre-teens. They're kinda old to have anyone watching them but whatever. Money is money and I'm going to be in desperate need of that and scholarships since my parents won't be paying for my trip. And I'll probably have to buy myself a new computer soon because this piece of crap that I'm using just isn't doing the job.

The Dog Days of summer, the hottest days of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, start today. What's your favorite thing to do in hot weather?

View 502 Answers

Wait ... it's going to get even hotter? fml

I like to go bike riding in hot weather. Which is a really bad idea I know, but for some reason I always get more exercise done during the summer than any time of year. I think that it's the influence of being away from school for so long. I also like to swim but don't a whole lot ... mainly because I can't usually find someone who shares my enthusiasm ... and my hands get extremely wrinkly when they come in contact with chlorine (I think that's what causes it) and look like brains, which is fairly gross.

I volunteered at Impact (a church in downtown Houston) for the last week for their vbs. Basically all I did was watch impoverished kids all day, which was a really good feeling but also really exhausting. You might why I'm participating in vbs when I'm supposedly agnostic. Does this mean I've changed? I don't know yet honestly.

And no I'm not listening to Michael Jackson just because he died recently, it just happened to be what came up next. X)

Because I have tons of free time right now.

OKAY: Rules are you cannot under any circumstances say NEITHER or BOTH. Its obvious that we want our guys to be well rounded, and probably would like to say BOTH, but then its no fun! Choose the one that matters most to you, and be truthful.

In a guy I like..

LIGHT HAIR/DARK HAIR?
Dark, though I don't have much of a preference.

LIGHT EYES/DARK EYES?
Dark, because no one appreciates dark eyes, from experience. But I also really like green eyes ...

LONG HAIR/SHORT HAIR?
How long are we talking? Or short? Those are very subjective adjectives. I guess somewhere in the middle though closer to short.

CURLY/STRAIGHT?
Curly. Curly hair is just adorable.

SCRUFFY GUY/WELL DRESSED AND CLEAN CUT?
Clean-cut. I've never really gone for scruffy.

OBSESSED WITH VIDEO GAMES/OBSESSED WITH CARS?
Video games because I can probably relate more to it. Unless the video games that he's obsessed with are like ... Gears of War and Halo. I fail at shooters.

FUNNY/SERIOUS?
Funny most of the time but knows how to be serious when the situation calls for it.

INTELLECTUAL/ATHLETIC?
Intellectual, I can always get him to be more athletic.

BUYS YOU JEWELERY/BUYS YOU TEDDY BEAR?
Jewelry. Trust me I already have way too many plushies. I'm trying to downsize my collection.

FINGERS LACED/NOT LACED? (While holding hands)
Not laced if at all. I really don't like pda. It's just a personal thing.

WEAK WIMP/TEMPERATE FIGHTER?
Temperate fighter. I guy who can't stand up for himself or for me isn't worth it.

LISTENER/TALKER?
Talker. If he was a listener our conversations would never get anywhere because I'm also a listener.

TAKES YOU TO A MOVIE AND DINNER/TAKES YOU BOWLING?
Bowling. Dinner and a movie is so cliche.

CALLS TO TALK/TEXTS YOU?
Definitely calling, I hate texting. Though actually meeting up trumps both.

HUGE FLIRT/ISN'T ROMANTIC AT ALL?
I'd prefer someone who's not romantic at all to someone who flirts with anything that moves.

LOVES YOUR FAMILY/LOVES YOUR FRIENDS?
Loves my friends, or at least understands that I need to spend time with them too.

GREAT IN SCHOOL/SKIPS TO HANG OUT WITH YOU?
School is important! But that would be really sweet if he skipped every once in awhile, just not all the time.

IN TOUCH WITH FEMININE SIDE/TOTAL DUDE?
It really doesn't matter though I'd probably understand a guy better who was in touch w/ his feminine side.

GREETS WITH A KISS/GREETS WITH A HUG?
Spice it up every time. I get so tired of monotony. (though I really like tradition. Hmmm ...)

SKINNY JEANS/PANTS DOWN TO HIS KNEES?
Skinny jeans. I can't stand that super saggy look. Sorry guys but it's not hot.

LISTENS TO COUNTRY/LISTENS TO RAP?
I can't say neither? I dislike both country and rap though if I had to choose one country is the lesser of two evils.

HITS ON YOUR MOM/HITS ON YOUR FRIEND?
That would be so weird if he seriously hit on my Mom. Not because my mom isn't attractive at all, it would just be awkward. So I guess a friend.

OLDER/YOUNGER?
As long as he's only a couple of years older or younger it doesn't really matter.

FACIAL HAIR/NO?
Clean shaven. Just because there's a fine line in facial hair between attractive and tacky. And I really don't like beards or mustaches.

BRACES/GLASSES?
Glasses on the right guy are really sexy.

BLUNTLY HONEST/TELLS YOU WHAT YOU LIKE TO HEAR?
I prefer bluntly honest in general, even if I don't like it, just because I'm so tired of two-faced people. But I think that if he knows that it's really going to hurt me then he should just tell me what I want to hear. Sometimes we need that.

RIDES A MOTORCYCLE/SPORTS CAR?
Motorcycle as long as it's not his main form of transportation, because then I'd be really worried all the time.

WEARS HOT SUNGLASSES/COLOGNE?
Cologne. I really like the nice clean cologne scent, no musk. That's way too overpowering.

SUPER SKINNY/SUPER BUFF?
He can't be skinnier than me so I guess super buff as long as it's not body builder buff. Yuck.
.
RESEMBLES JOHNNY DEPP/RESEMBLES CHANNING TATUM?
Resembles Johnny Depp when he was younger. I would never date a guy that's old enough to be my Dad.

OBSESSED WITH MUSIC/OBSESSED WITH MOVIES?
Music. I love music but don't know enough that's not mainstream and that would be amazing if he could introduce me to some.

CALLS YOU SWEETIE/CALLS YOU BABE?
Oh no, pet names. I guess sweetie.

SUPER TAN/SUPER PALE?
Tan. That would mean that he actually gets some outside time and has more of a life than just his computer/Xbox/etc.

AMAZING SINGER/AMAZING DANCER?
Amazing dancer. That is incredibly attractive.

PLAYS GUITAR/PLAYS THE DRUMS?
Guitar, I really respect people that can play it.

REALLY CLEAN/SUPER SLOPPY?
Clean. I wouldn't be able to handle someone really sloppy and would clean up after him all the time, which is already heading down the wrong road.

LOVES THE OUTDOORS/IN THE HOUSE TYPE OF GUY?
Outdoors, hands down.

SOCIAL BUTTERFLY/WALLFLOWER?
Social butterfly. I like confident guys.

HEAVY DRINKER/CHAIN SMOKER?
I hate smoking. But that would be really embarrassing if he was a drunk. I don't care if he has a few drinks but not a lot and not every day. Oh no.

FOOTBALL STAR/COMPUTER GEEK?
Computer geek because football stars are, on average, not very intelligent and I can't respect someone who's not on par, or really close to me, intellectually.

GIVES YOU HIS JACKET/GIVES YOU HIS HAT?
Jacket because that would be really sweet. I'll probably take his hat anyway if he has one.

SHAVES HIS LEGS/SHAVED UNDERARMS?
Shaved legs because then he's probably a swimmer! Or gay. Yay.

GREAT SMILE/GREAT HAIR?
Great smile. If a guy has really amazing hair that shows his priorities pretty quickly.

So I've been working at my job full-time for only 2 weeks and they've already slashed my hours. And I do mean slashed. I don't work again until next Tuesday. They said it's because business has been really slow lately but then I kinda wonder why bother to employ me in the first place? Anyway, so I'm looking for another job for the summer. Just did an application for Pet'smart and hopefully I'll get it ... because practically no one is hiring right now. It's going to be even more difficult than the beginning of the summer. And the thing that really gets me is that two other jobs called me right after I was hired for this one and I didn't bother calling then .. and I bet that they wouldn't already have cut my hours.

With that said I've been spending even more time on video games and reading this summer. I finally beat Twilight Princess today in fact. (yeah I know took forever) The ending for it was pretty good but I'm depressed that Midna in her true form wasn't in more of the game because her character design is awesome ... probably going to draw some fanart soon in fact. It's not like I have anything else to do. Since I've finished TP I'm contining on Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance. I've beaten it before but on easy and I really think that I can do it on normal ... and the beginning chapters of the sequal are difficult so I want all my leveled up and amazing characters back. (since for some reason I can't take them from my easy file. Whatever.) Aaaaaand I've finished the Hunchback of Notre Dame and started on Les Mis and am already about ... a third of the way through that or so.

I have no life.

Finally went to the post office today to get our passports but they won't come in for 4-6 weeks. Hopefully that will be in time for the cruise otherwise we won't be able to get of the boat which was kinda the point for rescheduling it for later on anyway.

... think that's it. I'm trying to post here more often.

No matter what language you speak, you've probably come across words or phrases in another language that sound better than their equivalents in your native tongue. What's your favorite word or phrase in a foreign language?

View 507 Answers

Quoi de neuf, oeuf? (French) Literal translation=What's up egg? One of my friends learned it that way in school because it rhymed and it was part of a fairy tale or something. I forget. Anyhoo. I thought that it was really cute and now we say that to each other all the time. Of course, I say it to people that don't speak French too and they find me profoundly weird/geeky ... but I'm used to that. Honestly French just sounds prettier than English, but this expression is my personal favorite to use.

And speaking of languages I'm starting Greek next semester! Probably not going to minor in it like Chinese (actually I don't think that I have enough time to minor in it, especially if when I study abroad) but I only had 14 hours which is way too few though now I'm thinking 18 is too many ... and I feel kinda guilty for not getting that far in German.

... mainly because I never go online during the summer. Especially now that I have

A job! I know, finally right? I've been saying that I would get a job since the beginning of last semester but it takes me until the summer for me to finally get one. It was really difficult too, even here in Texas where the economy isn't supposed to be as bad. Anyway, it's at Kingwood Garden Center, which is about 15 min from where I live. It's not that bad, just kinda boring. I basically just work outside all day with plants (Fri-Tues 9-6 except on Sun when it's 10-5), though lately they said that I would be moved inside to primarily do register, which is supposedly even more boring. So no it's not the most thrilling job but at least I have one, which you have to admit is pretty spectacular in itself. Not really any boys there (most of them JUST graduated) but it's not like they would notice me even if there were because

My acne is back! It's awful. I thought that it was just caused by finals stress but then they never went away ... so now I'm about to start up on acutane again. It's really annoying though because this time I have to do something ridiculous called the ipledge program before I can start. In case you don't know much about acutane, if women get pregnant while taking it their babies often have horrible birth defects. Even with all the warnings chicks were still getting pregnant so the people in charge of it got really paranoid and came up with the ipledge program. Aaaaaaand I'm going to quit while I'm ahead before I get into a really good rant about this. As long as my face clears up it'll all be worth it.

Oh you know that summer trip that I mentioned awhile back? Well we're not going on it anymore. I mean we are, just not that one. You see, they cancelled the Mexico stop on the cruise due to swine flu scares ... but kept the cruise for the same length and for the same price, just with one less stop. So we rescheduled it and now we're going on July 26 to the same places. Hopefully (and yes this is completely self-centered) there won't be another crisis to end this one.

Before I got the job I was reading a lot this summer. And I mean loads. I was alternating literature and "junk fiction" and lately started reading the Hunchback of Notre Dame. It's pretty good so far, except that like every other writer from that century Hugo uses bukus of long sentences and many characters who are only mentioned once but named. (I take it as a general rule that you don't name a character unless he/she is mildly important to plotline but Hugo seems to name a lot of pointless characters just for kicks.) Also, the storyline will be moving along just fine but then he suddenly deems it necessary to have a huge chapter dedicated to nothing but Parisian architecture. Again, this could be useful later on in the story but somehow I really don't think so. Otherwise I'm enjoying the book and am kinda sad that they took out Gringoire in the Disney adaptation.

Speaking of Disney I've stopped playing on Kingdom Hearts for the time being. I've defeated Maleficent and Riku but really don't want to level up Sora so I can do the Hades cup and beat Sephiroth and the game and whatnot ... guess I'm just lazy. Though that's really an awful excuse because I've lately discovered Pokemon again (I'm going to catch them all this time, really) which is nothing but leveling up. This is made even more frustrating due to the point that I made in paranthesis. So because of these two leveling monsters I've run and hidden behind Zelda Twilight Princess because it's not based on levels but on hearts, and you can only have 20 max of those. I also should really finish it because I was stuck on Arbiter's Grounds forever (stupid scary skeletons) but now I'm in City in the Sky and have basically finished it. It really does take me an astonishingly long time to complete a video game. I never just keep playing until I do. I always get sidetracked by another one or a book or something ... and so never end up finishing it. Whoops.

My sister finally graduated! So now there are two college kids in the house and the Parents are really going to have empty nest syndrome come the end of the summer. She's going to go to SFA and major in Forestry or Botany with minors in English and Bassoon. (which I'm kinda jealous of her for. I couldn't stick with the oboe though I primarily blame Shreve for effectively killing my band-love) She's trying to work at the Mercer Arboretum and Botanic Garden so if that works there will also be two garden people in the house, technically three because my mom gardens lots, and my dad will be outnumbered in another aspect. Woo hoo.

See if I actually came online more and posted then I wouldn't write such long messages. Still don't think that's going to happen. And to leave you with a random quote

"I know ev'ry mile will be worth the while
When I go the distance I'll be right where I belong"
                                   -from Disney's Hercules

I love that movie, actually pretty much every Disney movie. My top five would have to be Mulan, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, the Lion King, and the Jungle Book but Herc is definitely up there too. Maybe at number 6. I know the Jungle Book doesn't seem to fit; it's the only one outside of the Disney Renaissance but come on, it has Baloo (I loved him when I was a kid. btw the same voice actor did Thomas O'Malley and Little John but they were't nearly as cool) and Kaa and Shere Khan and Bagheera and the vultures like the Beatles ... so the question should be why NOT the Jungle Book.

Do you ever have recurring dreams? If so, are they good dreams or nightmares?

View 501 Answers

Actually, I don't ever remember any of my dreams. I haven't since I was a little kid. I'd almost believe that I don't dream at all except that I sleep talk occasionally ... so apparently I have to be dreaming about something. It's really weird.

We're finally going on a cruise this year! Okay so "we" is my family and I and therefore it probably will not be as fun as other possibilities ... but I'm still really excited. We leave out of Galveston on June 7th and stop at Montego Bay, Grand Cayman, and Cozumel respectively in 7 days. I really can't wait until summer break gets here. I'm already preparing by trying to stock up on sundresses because I really don't have anything suitable to wear for this kind of occassion. Blue jeans and a t-shirt pretty much defines me on an average basis and I want this to be something special.

Speaking of breaks, I'm on spring break right now, finally. It seems to be ridiculously late this semester. But the nice thing about it is that school will be out again three weeks afterward. Not much to do here. I have to find a job for the summer (starting that tomorrow), work on Chinese, get the information for my Astronomy project, and work out like crazy. I've felt really unhealthy since winter started and now that spring is here I want to get more into shape. Doing just karate doesn't cut it.

By the way, had a karate tournament all day Saturday in New Orleans. I didn't place in anything (and I have to admit that I did only participate in kata) which I blame primarily on not feeling challenged. I hope it's not because I just suck at karate; I'm a lot more accomplished at it than I was a year and a half ago. It's even more sad because I passed up the chance of fighting my nemesis, Crazy Girl, in kumite. Long story behind that one, though honestly I could be overcomplicating it.

Tangent: I'm a French major. I really really want to study abroad in France. My parents aren't going to pay for it. Therefore, I need to apply for an insane amount of scholarships. In one that I'm going to try for you have to try out for a model position, actually model in a fashion show at the end of the semester (put on by FREN 2155) and win, and then you receive a $1000 scholarship to go to France! Okay, so it's not a lot. I'm hoping that since my old French professor (Monsieur Brager) organizing it again, he might be more preferential in my favor because he knows that I'm a major. If not, that's okay. I don't mind fighting for what I want, it just helps if there is some way for me to accomplish this faster.

If all works out, I want to study next spring in France, preferably at l'Institut d'Etudes Politiques in Aix-en-Provence. I chose this university primarily because of its location but honestly, anywhere would be amazing.

Otherwise nothing else going on. I'll try to keep this up-to-date but I've always been bad at keeping journals but this hopefully won't be strictly journalistic. I like to think that I am creative enough to think of diverse topics to discuss.

What's the best April Fool's joke you've seen today?

View 500 Answers

Nothing really has happened this year. I was expecting my astronomy professor to do something for April Fool's (because he's just that kind of person) but he didn't. Just pulled off another semi-stripped again.

Last year though my friends got me. Twice. They saran wrapped my door shut and after I tore it down did it again because they hadn't finished but included a smiley face the second time around. It was a lot easier to do that kind of thing when we all lived in dorms. Quel dommage.

I've never really done pranks myself. I'm not creative enough in that sense and I can't lie convincingly.
